Head of Electronic Resources and Interlibrary Loan

North Park University – Brandel Library (Chicago, IL), 2015-present

  • Coordinate and manage electronic resources over their entire life cycle, including acquisition, licensing, assessment, and maintenance
  • Support access to electronic resources using a variety of tools, including batch editing and loading MARC records, managing multiple knowledge bases, maintaining library discovery services, managing digital assets in LibGuides, and patron authentication services

Archival Volunteer – North Park University

Studs Terkel Radio Archive Description Internship

Gained experience working with a Digital Asset Management tool (Starchive) and managing digitized audiovisual content. Improved access to records by adding a title, brief description, tags (natural language and Library of Congress Subject Headings), and categories (from a taxonomy) to records. Corrected mistakes in existing metadata to ensure accuracy and improve usability.


Technical Skills

I’m comfortable on several operating systems (Windows, Mac, and iOS) and have mastery over the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook). Beyond these basics, I’m proficient with many other tools, languages, and schemas and am always looking to extend my technical skill set.

Library Technology

Voyager Integrated Library System

I have more than 5 years of experience with the Circulation, Cataloging, Acquisitions, and SysAdmin modules of Voyager in a consortial environment and have served as technical system administrator for my institution.

MarcEdit

I frequently use MarcEdit to batch edit electronic resources records and have experience adding URL proxy information, adding and changing call numbers, and modifying field information. I’ve further automated this work into automated “task lists” which save processing time and ensure consistency. See posts tagged with ‘MarcEdit’.

SFX

I work as the SFX administrator for my library where I have improved performance and reduced errors to under 1% by updating the underlying KnowledgeBase and improving the user interface. I also serve on a statewide committee (CARLI’s SFX System Committee) that researches and promotes best practices for this tool.

ILLiad

Starting in the fall of 2015, I’ve worked to implement ILLiad for the Brandel Library. This involved coordinating with other library services (SFX, EZProxy, library website) and optimizing the ILLiad workflows (customizing templates, creating routing rules, etc.).

EZProxy

I manage patron authentication through OCLC’s EZProxy service. I planned and managed an effort to move from a locally hosted version to an version hosted by OCLC and have made extensive style customizations to the public facing pages to match the institution’s style.

Electronic Resource Management

I manage all of my institution’s electronic resources over their entire life cycle, including acquisition, licensing, assessment, and maintenance. I use a variety of tools to complete this work, including an Electronic Resource Management tool (CORAL), MarcEdit, and link checking software.

OCLC Services

I have experience using OCLC’s Connexion Client, WorldShare Interlibrary Loan, and WorldShare Metadata services.

EBSCO Discovery Service

I led the Brandel Library’s implementation of EBSCO’s Discovery Service and currently lead the maintenance and assessment activities for my institution.

Metadata

I am very comfortable with a variety of metadata standards including MARC, Dublin Core, and XML. I also have experience working with COUNTER compliant reports, EOCR and EDI, metadata harvesting via Z39.50, OpenURL linking, and other standards. I have limited experience working with PBCore, METS, and Premis.

Programming Languages and Coding

SQL

I have written many custom select queries within the Voyager environment and have shared my queries through the statewide consortia (CARLI).

MacroExpress

I use MacroExpress extensively for both my routine work and to automate aspects of my job. I’ve given several presentations about the uses of MacroExpress within the context of an academic library.

Python

I completed the “Foundations of Information Processing in Library and Information Science” (LIS452) through the University of Illinois. I have started using Python to automate some of my library work and hope to use Python to explore data analysis work in the future.

HTML

I completed the “Web Design and Construction for Organizations” (LIS590) through the University of Illinois and currently work at the webmaster for the Northfield Historical Society.

CSS

I completed the “Web Design and Construction for Organizations” (LIS590) through the University of Illinois and currently work at the webmaster for the Northfield Historical Society.

Web Tools

Open Journal Systems

I manage the site for The Covenant Quarterly and have customized the CSS and extended the functionality of the Open Journal System through plugins.

Omeka

I serve as webmaster for the Northfield Historical Society as well as manage a personal family archive using the Omeka platform.

WordPress

I help manage The Covenant Quarterly’s Forum site as well as my personal website (including this one!) using WordPress.

Archon

I migrated existing archival data to the CARLI managed Archon system and helped developed documentation for this product.

Social Media

I have managed a number of different institutional social media accounts  and was invited to serve as a panel member for a “Social Media Focus Group” sponsored by Taylor & Francis in Philadelphia.

Tableau

I use Tableau to explore data to improve the efficiency of library systems and to create interactive and beautiful reports for external audiences.
